When it comes to lawn care, the way you water, when you water, and how often you water will either make or break your turfgrass. Doing it all wrong will not only turn your lush, green lawn into an eyesore, but it will also cause you to waste time, effort, and probably a lot of water. If you’re clueless about proper watering, check out these tips.
The type of soil you have, along with other factors, will determine how often you should water your lawn. For example, clay soils need to be watered at least twice a week while sandy soils need to be watered every 3 days. You’re not supposed to water your lawn as frequently as you water your landscape plants. One of the worst things you can do is to water your lawn for 15 minutes every day because this will lead to fungus growth, as well as a shallow root system that won’t be able to provide your turfgrass with enough support.
Watering your lawn in the early morning, preferably before 10 AM, is the best way to go. Since the temperature is cooler, the process of evaporation is kept to a minimum and your turfgrass won’t suffer during the hottest times of the day. If you can’t manage to water in the morning, do it in the late afternoon. Be sure not to wait until night because watering when the temperature is cooler will make your turfgrass wet until morning. This will make it more vulnerable to disease.
While you’re watering your lawn, check to see if the soil is moistened down to 6 inches. In case you’re not aware, this is the average depth of a grass-root system that’s healthy.
